COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Honours Degree in Science provides a higher education scientific experience for the student in decommissioning & waste management. The course has been designed to provide a combination of extensive practical work supported by academic studies with a unique experience within the National College for Nuclear Northern Hub. The aim of the programme is to provide work ready scientists with the relevant skills, knowledge and behaviours to work within a highly technical environment.

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR

The programme is designed for individuals who may be looking to progress and top-up from an existing Level 5 science qualification to a Level 6 Honours Degree. The course has also been designed to provide a sector jumping opportunity. It provides an in-depth study of nuclear science and technology and prepares students to enter or develop into Scientist level within the nuclear industry. The programme also enables the student to select a specific pathway relevant to their employment aspirations and/or local employment demand. The course has also been designed in conjunction with the Level 6 Nuclear Degree Apprenticeship standard.

WHAT DOES THIS COURSE INVOLVE?

During the Honours Degree you will study on one of three pathways with topic areas which will include:
Topic Areas

The course will be delivered on a block release basis providing opportunities for students to undertake individual modules supporting continuous professional development. A range of delivery methods will be utilised during studies with a large emphasis on ‘learning from doing’. This will include the use of a virtual realty suite enabling the students to experience industrial systems and situations within a safe environment. In addition the students will have the opportunity to work within the brand new National College for Nuclear Northern Hub, with state-of-the-art equipment preparing for real work experiences and real industrial scenarios. A large proportion of the student activity will be with project work.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

An HND or a Foundation Degree Nuclear Science qualification or an HND or Foundation Degree in Science (non-nuclear) with a Level 5 National College for Nuclear Access to Nuclear Engineering and Science.

WHAT ARE THE ASSESSMENT METHODS

On the successful completion of the course, an Honours Degree in Science (BSc Hons) will be awarded in Decommissioning & Waste Management.

The awarding body is the University of Cumbria and accredited by the National College for Nuclear.

HOW LONG IS THE COURSE

Two years.
