COURSE DESCRIPTION

This three-year course has been designed to provide a combination of extensive practical work supported by academic studies with a unique experience within the National College for Nuclear Northern Hub. The aim of the programme is to provide work ready technicians and scientists with the relevant skills, knowledge and behaviours to work within a highly technical environment.

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR

This course is designed for individuals who may be looking for employment or already employed within the nuclear industry. It provides a thorough background in the key elements of the nuclear lifecycle thus developing an all-round Nuclear Technician. The course has also been designed in conjunction with the nuclear degree apprenticeship standards.

WHAT DOES THIS COURSE INVOLVE?

You will study a range of modules, including:

In addition, students will have the opportunity to work within the Technology Learning & Project Centre with state of the art equipment, preparing for real work experiences and real industrial scenarios. A large proportion of the student activity will be with project work.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

A suitable Level 3 qualification(s) equivalent to 240 UCAS points, or a Level 3 National College for Nuclear Access to Nuclear Engineering and Science.

WHAT ARE THE ASSESSMENT METHODS

A range of assessment methods will be utilised which will include practical experimentation, written assignments, projects and exams.

HOW LONG IS THE COURSE

Three years.

WHAT ARE THE PROGRESSION METHODS

Foundation degree graduates will be able to progress to technical and middle management roles in this expanding industry, including decommissioning technologist, project management and control, and other related functions. You could also go on to ‘top up’ your qualification to a BSc honours degree in Decommissioning & Waste Management. Completion of an appropriate top-up degree may allow students to progress onto MSc programmes in Nuclear Management and Energy Environmental Engineering.
