COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Foundation Degree in Science provides a higher education experience for the student decommissioning & waste management. The course has been designed to provide a combination of extensive practical work supported by academic studies with a unique experience within the National College for Nuclear Northern Hub. The aim of the programme is to provide work ready technicians and scientists with the relevant skills, knowledge and behaviours to work within a highly technical environment.

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR

The programme is designed for individuals who may be looking for employment or already employed within the nuclear industry. It provides a thorough background in the key elements of the nuclear lifecycle thus preparing the student for employment. The programme also enables the student to select a specific pathway relevant to their employment aspirations and/or local employment demand. The course has also been designed in conjunction with the Nuclear Degree Apprenticeship standards.

WHAT DOES THIS COURSE INVOLVE?

During the degree you will study on one of three pathways with topic areas which will include:

The course will be delivered on a block release basis providing opportunities for students to undertake individual modules supporting continuous professional development. A range of delivery methods will be utilised during studies with a large emphasis on ‘learning from doing’. This will include the use of a virtual realty suite enabling the students to experience industrial systems and situations within a safe environment.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

A suitable Level 3 qualification(s) equivalent to 48 UCA S points or a Level 3 National College for Nuclear Access to Nuclear Engineering and Science.

WHAT ARE THE ASSESSMENT METHODS

On the successful completion of the course, a Foundation Degree in Science (FdSc) will be awarded in Decommissioning & Waste Management.

The awarding body is the University of Cumbria and accredited by the National College for Nuclear.
